Girth Gears

Girth gears are large, cylindrical gears, which are utilized to transmit torque between parallel shafts in industrial machine rotary kilns, ball mills and other heavy-duty machines. They are normally fitted with teeth on the outside of the circumference and are mounted on the periphery of the equipment. The girth gear teeth engage with a pinion gear attached to the driving source, e.g. an electric motor. The rotational force is then passed on to the equipment through the girth gear so that it can do what it is set up to do. Girth gears are composed of high strength metal like alloy steel or even cast iron and are fashioned to support heavy loads and adverse climatic conditions. Girth gears used in machinery of industrial requirements should be properly maintained by lubrication and checking wear and damages to ensure the safe and efficient functioning of the girth gears.
